How to Be a Better Lawyer: Tools & Tips for New Lawyers

You're a hard worker, but in this article you'll learn how to be a better lawyer. A lawyer that is a problem-solver and is well respected in your field.

If you're like me, you probably wish someone would just tell you how to be a better lawyer now, so you don't have to wait to make a million mistakes. I'm going to do my best to help you out in this article.

About 18 years ago I was a new lawyer who jumped into trials as a criminal prosecutor.

I was fortunate to have guidance as to where to sit in the courtroom, how to voir dire and what it meant to be an ethical prosecutor. But no one told me how to organize my life to create ease.

To be fair, they didn’t hire me to create ease and grace when I entered a courtroom. They hired me to get the job done no matter how overwhelmed or stressed out I was.

What I wish someone told me was there are tools to create a better life while still getting the job done in the courtroom (or the office, if you’re not in court.)

Now that I coach lawyers, I can help them get the tools they need to make their lives easier.

This is some really good information about being a good lawyer. It is good to know that you should think about improving your skills. It does seem like you should look for a lawyer who is always trying to get better.

Thanks! I think most lawyers try to improve their skills when it comes to legal topics. In fact, they’re required to take a certain amount of post-education credits each year. I don’t think we’re taught enough about the practical day to day parts of lawyering that’ll make our lives easier early on in our careers. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

You’ve got great tips for being a lawyer. I love how you said that great lawyers have ease and grace in and out of the courtroom. We’d love to hire someone like that for my brother’s drug offense case.

I had a sister that was thinking about getting a criminal defense attorney. It makes sense that you would want to search for someone with better personal skills. Picking someone that will have a charm about them is a good idea.

When you’re looking for a lawyer to represent you, it’s not easy to know whether that attorney is well-regarded in the local legal community. I know plenty of nice defense attorneys that I’d never want to represent me. I definitely recommend that people looking for a good attorney ask their friends to see if there is a competent — and charismatic — attorney they know in the local area.

One of the important things to do as a lawyer is to always make sure to fact-check your statements since these can come under fire if the facts that are known contradict what you’re saying. Always make sure that the knowledge you have is consistent with what the rest of the court knows since there is a possibility that the other might know something that you don’t. If I were a criminal defense lawyer, I would always try my best to make sure that everything has been fact-checked before facing the court in a trial.

So true. As a criminal prosecutor, I know that judges trust me (and other attorneys) when they see that I’ve done the research and fact-checked any statement I make. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Adrian. Xo ~ Dina

My brother was involved in a criminal case and wants to make sure that it will turn out well. It was explained here that a great lawyer should be honest and ethically represent his side. Furthermore, it’s recommended to hire a trusted criminal defense lawyer for the best outcome.
